Sushi Time Fish Report for the Week of March 7th thru the 14th, 2014

frThe fishing action remains really slow for the past few weeks.  Overall again, not a bad week of fishing, again only in quantity, which is very much normal for this time of year. Cold water inshore fish species available are Bonito, Yellow Tail, Sierra, Rooster Fish and Skip jack.  With very windy conditions and an average temperature of 83º F, with clear skies and an average water  temperature of 73º F… Read the complete Sushi Time Cabo Fish Report at LosCabosGuide.com

My weekly Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report will be suspended indefinitely as once again health issues strike. We will be in Denver, Colorado for a while as Mary once again battles cancer. The latest MRI has shown the return of the small cell lung cancer as it has metastized once again to her brain. We had four months of relief since her last round of chemo and await word from her Doctor here about how this latest showing is so tough. Your good wishes and prayers are appreciated, and hopefully we return to Cabo soon. When we do I will resume the report. Regards, George

Note from the editor:
Our good wishes an prayers are with you both. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

WEATHER:  We had mostly sunny skies this week with the highs in the mid 80’s and lows in the low 60’s.  I heard that in a few spots it reached the mid 50’s but not at the marina or at our house.  We did have a bit of rain this week.  Last week I mentioned that it had felt humid at the end of the week and we had seen some low black clouds that made it feel as if it would rain.  We didn’t have any of those low black clouds on Monday, just cloudy skies, but in the evening we did get rain, steady enough to get everything wet but not strong enough to wash the cars! Winds were from the north-north-east at the end of the week.

WATER: We did have great water conditions once again with the exception of early in the week on the Pacific side in the afternoons.  During that time frame for the first three days the winds blew fairly strong causing some very choppy conditions up past the lighthouse and offshore.  Of course the afternoons are when most boats were coming back to the marina so it was a downhill, downwind run and not to uncomfortable.  The rest of the time the seas on the Pacific side were in the 1-4 foot range and water temperatures were 74 early in the week, slowly dropping to 70-71 degrees by the end of the week. On the Cortez side of the Cape the water was smooth, almost like a pool most of the week with swells 1-2 feet and wind riffles in the afternoons. The water temperature dropped on this side as well with water toward the shore from the 95 spot and the 1150 going from 74 degrees to 72-71 degrees, and the water on the Gorda Bank dropping from 76 degrees at the start of the week to 74 at the end of the week. . . . PISCES SPORTFISHING WEEKLY FISH REPORT
January 25th to January 31st, 2014
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined: 86%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 70%, Dorado 25%, Tuna 22%, Other 10%

pisces-sportfishing-marlin-caboBILLFISH: Fishing this week was for the most part consistent, however we had a couple of days when it was too windy to get up the Pacific to the Golden Gate where the marlin have been hanging out, causing boats to seek other locations with calmer seas but not quite as  good production. Top marlin boat was Pisces Shambala for releasing seven striped marlin at the Golden Gate for Brad Kline & friends from Bethesda, Maryland – all caught on live mackerel. The day before this Pisces Tracy Ann did well to release four marlin up to 120 lbs. and catch four tuna up to 20 lbs. for Curtis Matthew from Rock Hill, South Carolina, at Herradura.  Boats headed back to the Golden Gate again and Halcon with Samuel Connors & Ken Walsh aboard released four slightly bigger marlin, the largest 150 lbs. aboard Halcon.  Closing out the week Pisces Adriana released four stripers for Canadian angler Ken Kuhn. Other catches were of one to three marlin, in the 100 to 140 lb. class with seventy percent of our charters catching striped marlin, plus a lone sailfish. Pisces anglers caught a total of 92 striped marlin this week & 1 sailfish; all released.

OTHER SPECIES: We were surprised that the dorado catches have remained steady though not prolific. Catches were general of one to three fish up to 30 lbs. and were found when trolling for marlin, about one quarter of our boats found dorado and our total fish count was of 30 fish. Yellow fin tuna catches were best at San Jaime but the schools were moving around, so they could be there one day, gone the next. . . . .  Read the complete Pisces Sportfishing Cabo Fish Report at LosCabosGuide.com

Gordo Banks Pangas Fish Report February 1st

Gordo Banks Pangas, San Jose del Cabo, Fish Report January 22nd to February 1st, 2014

gordo-banks-pangas-wahooAnglers – Crowds of visiting tourists are arriving in the Los Cabos Resort area, looking to escape the frigid temperatures spread across northern territories. Local weather conditions have been very pleasant, scattered morning cloud cover, with plenty of warm afternoon sunshine, lows of about 60 degrees, with highs in the 75 to 80 degree range. The persistent northerly winds have tapered off some, not as strong as in previous weeks. This is now peak season for spotting whales in local waters, with common daily sightings of both gray and humpback whales.

Ocean clarity has been very clean close to shore, in the direction of the East Cape the conditions are a bit more off colored due to northern winds, but from La Fortuna to Cabo San Lucas the clarity has been great for this time of year. Water temperatures varied from about 70 degree around the corner on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, to 74 degrees on the outside of San Jose del Cabo, inshore grounds through this same stretch was averaged about 72 degrees. Live bait situation is still lacking, though there has been various other options available, including ballyhoo, moonfish, skipjack for strip bait, brined dead sardinas, etc. . . . Read the complete Gordo Banks Pangas Fishing Report at LosCabosGuide.com

PISCES SPORTFISHING WEEKLY FISH REPORT

BILLFISH: Fishing was really good in Cabo this week and although striped marlin catches edged out the other species as the most likely catch, sheer numbers of tuna beat them by far. This made for great fishing because not only did close to half the boats catch marlin, they could also load up on tuna and even dorado which made a brief comeback. No doubt about who took top honors for striped marlin; Pisces C Rod caught and released eight in one day for Nate Springer, Kevin Vivian & James Lambard on January 19th at  Golden Gate, these same guys also released four marlin the previous day on the same boat.  Other boats caught one to three marlin in the 100 to 160 lb. class. The marlin took live mackerel or frozen ballyhoo and were caught on the Pacific with the Golden Gate area the most productive. Forty eight percent of our charters managed to hook striped marlin. Jamie Price from Minot, North Dakota brought the family for a fishing trip and ended up being the only anglers to catch & release a sailfish a little closer at Migrino aboard Pisces La Brisa. Our total billfish catch this week was 66 marlin and 1 sailfish released.

OTHER SPECIES: It is interesting to see how many large sharks are being caught. For several years shark catches  dropped dramatically but they are making a comeback as we can note in recent catches such as a 100 lb. thresher shark aboard Tracy Ann, a 135 lb’er aboard Fearless, as well as a 145 lb. hammerhead on a panga and an 80 lb. mako aboard Petrolero. These catches are considered special and anglers want to keep them, but hopefully more fishermen will choose to release them as time goes one, even though it is a much more difficult task than releasing marlin. . . . .  Read the complete Pisces Sportfishing Cabo Fish Report at LosCabosGuide.com

pisces-fleet-tuna-catch-17jan14BILLFISH: There is no better place to be right now than Cabo, fantastic weather, warmer than average water temperatures and superb fishing in general, with every single boat sent out by Pisces catching fish.  Marlin catches were good, but with a full moon the fish were feeding at night and not quite as hungry during the daytime, nevertheless forty five percent, a little under half of the boats, did manage to hook up between one and four striped marlin. Marlin could be found most days at Golden Gate or close by, but could not always be enticed to eat even their favorite bait, mackerel. Craig Romanisson from Vancouver was out with friends aboard Pisces Adriana on January 11th  when the released four striped marlin up to 120 LBS. This same day Pisces Fearless, fishing the same area also had a quadruple marlin day for Ken Dellinger, Ryan Rousser & Kris Owens from McKinney, Texas. The only other boat to have a four marlin day was Pisces Rebecca on the 12th, for Gerald & Mary Schultz from Butesmart, Wisconsin, who also caught a 30 LB grouper. Other boats caught one or two fish, almost exclusively at Golden Gate on live bait. Our total marlin catch was of 34 fish all released. . . .  Read the complete Pisces Sportfishing Cabo Fish Report at LosCabosGuide.com

Gordo Banks Pangas Fishing Report January 18

Gordo Banks Pangas, San Jose del Cabo, Fish Report December 14 to 21st, 2013

gordo-banks-greg-bonitaAnglers – Crowds of tourists were noticeably fewer this past week, with less than two weeks to go until Christmas, people are now occupied with preparations and other priorities. As much of Northern America has been enduring icy conditions, the climate in Southern Baja has been comfortable, mostly sunny skies with highs of 80 degrees. Northern winds increased in recent days and this made for choppy ocean conditions, though water temperatures are still averaged a bit warmer than normal at 76/78 degrees throughout the region. We do expect currents to cool more rapidly now, as this is the month with the shortest days of the year. More and more whales are now arriving from the north, these mammals will be in this area for the next several months.

Supplies of bait consisted of caballito, ballyhoo, squid slabs and some skipjack and chihuil offshore. Sardinas became scarce again as the north winds made this a difficult task, limiting the range of the commercial fleet. Sardinas have been very scattered this fall, when found have been juvenile sized, a combination of factors contributing to this situation.  . . . Read the complete Gordo Banks Pangas Fishing Report at LosCabosGuide.com

Pisces Sportfishing Fish Report Deccember 21st to 27th, 2013
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 92%
Numbers at a glance: Billfish 35%, Dorado 63%, Tuna 12%, Other 21%

pisces-fleet-dorado-decemberBILLFISH: We had quite a dramatic slowdown on marlin catches this week, down from seventy two percent last week to thirty five percent this week. Now, that is not to say they are not here, they are, but are a little more difficult to catch.  On several days this week mobs of boats could be seen in a tightly packed area off of the Old Lighthouse. The reason is the yearly phenomenon of bottom fishing for marlin. This happens over a few weeks when they are down deep, feeding on plentiful bait at lower depths. A great deal of patience is needed and they will come and touch the baits and even mouth them but getting a hook up has not been easy. Other free swimming marlin have been seen close to shore but didn’t seem much interested in what was offered either. So just as we start to sound gloomy about the marlin bite, Pisces Tracy Ann went and caught an out of season blue marlin that was around 420 LBS. This vessel was out on December 22nd with anglers from Papillion, Nebraska, Jacob Cockle & Mason Becker aboard and headed up to the Herradura where the huge fish hit a blue & white lure. The fish took them one hour and thirty minutes to leader on 60 LB test line. . . . . .   Read the complete Pisces Sportfishing Cabo Fish Report at LosCabosGuide.com

Fly Hooker Sportfishing CaboFLY HOOKER SPORTFISHING – Fishing Charters
Cabo Fish Report, Dec  23, to Dec 29 2013
By: Captain George Landrum

WEATHER: We had beautiful weather this week as it was sunny every day! Not what most of you had for Christmas I know, but we loved it. Our highs during the week were in the mid 80’s while the lows were in the low 60’s. This morning at 4:30 it was 62 degrees, the same as yesterday.

WATER: At the end of the week the water in the Sea of Cortez continued to be a bit off-color and greenish while being in the 73-73 degree range. On the Pacific side the water was a bit warmer with 77 degrees being seen about halfway between here and Todo Santos and it slowly dropping to 73 degrees off of the lighthouse, with an occasional patch of 74 degree water. This water was cleaner as well. Surface conditions were great on the Pacific with swells between 2 and 4 feet and the prevailing wind early in the week was light and from the northwest. At the end of the week it shifted and blew out of the north. This caused some rough water on the Sea of Cortez side as the winds wrapped around the peninsula and came from the east, something we don’t often see. As I write this the wind is from the north at about 4 MPH, very nice conditions. . .  Click here to read the complete Fly Hooker Sportfishing  Cabo Fish Report on LosCabosGuide.com
