Big News out of Cabo San Lucas

Yesterday afternoon we heard that a big fish would be coming in, caught aboard a local charter boat “Mucho Loco” the rumor through the grapevine, was that it might be close to a thousand pounds, but there was some skepticism as to whether it was true. (read the whole story for a surprise ending): By dark the boat had not arrived and most people forgot about it and went home. We got a call around 9.00 pm from a friend saying that a big fish was being weighed on the main scale right in the thick of the pedestrian area.

Gordo Banks Pangas, San Jose del Cabo, Fish Report April 05 to April 12, 2014

gordo-banks-pangas-210-murray-wahooThe combined panga fleets launching out of La Playita, Puerto Los Cabos Marina sent out approximately 91 charters for this past week, with anglers accounting for a fish count of:  52 striped marlin, 2 sailfish, 5 wahoo, 3 yellowfin tuna, 8 yellowtail, 25 amberjack, 44 dorado, 14 sierra, 45 roosterfish, 550 bonito, 17 cabrilla, 40 triggerfish and 56 hauchinango.

Anglers –  This past weekend Southern Baja time zone moved clocks back one hour, we are now accustoming to this new schedule, days are rapidly lengthening as spring season progresses. Ideal all around climate now, last weekend a front with cooler cloud cover swept through and this week we have seen warmer clear sunny skies, high temperatures around 85 degrees, with lows of about 62 degrees, winds were lighter, more predominate from the south now, picking up later in the day. Ocean water temperatures ranged from 72 degrees on the Pacific’s Golden Gate Bank, to an average of 75/76 degrees off of San Jose del Cabo and towards Los Frailes.

After going slack, the billfish action rebounded off of San Jose del Cabo, anglers found great action for striped marlin, with a few sailfish also reported, the majority of the action was found 10 to 20 miles offshore, though on other days these fish were encountered within several miles of shore, as their food source moves, they move accordingly. Not a lot of surface baitfish activity seen and fish seem to be gorging on smaller sized squid, which apparently were now plentiful in local waters. The billfish were striking on rigged ballyhoo most often, though live caballito and trolled lures also took their share of strikes. . . . . . Read the complete Gordo Banks Pangas Fishing Report at

Gordo Banks Pangas Fish Report April 4th

Gordo Banks Pangas, San Jose del Cabo, Fish Report March 28 to April 04, 2014

gordo-banks-pangas-nathan-yellowtailAnglers – Spring break tourist activity seemed to have slowed some, even though the actual local Easter Holiday week does not begin until mid month. Weather has been nearly perfect, highs in the low 80s, there has been scattered cloud cover, burning off as the days progressed. Winds were moderate, mostly from the east and switching from the south, ocean temperature now averaged in the 70 to 75 degree range, a slight drop from last week, but still warmer than normal for early April. Quite a few whale sightings continue, despite this now being late season for these mammals, the majority have already began their northern migration.

Offshore , anglers found hit or miss action for the billfish, spread out, no concentrations of baitfish to attract any big numbers of striped marlin, fish were found further offshore some days and then as close as two miles to shore on others, clarity of water varyied with the flowing currents. Dorado were found every day, though only in small groups, more of these fish were within several miles of shore, this is where half beak schools (ballyhoo) have been schooling. Weights averaged 10 to 15 pounds.

No yellowfin tuna to speak of, except an odd fish up to 30 pounds, being hooked into while working high spots with yo-yo jigs, from Iman to San Luis Bank. The most common catch were the Eastern Pacific bonito, striking readily on the iron jigs, ranging 3 to 10 lb. There was more porpoise activity now being seen offshore, though not many yellowfin were being reported . . . . . . Read the complete Gordo Banks Pangas Fishing Report at

JC’s Sportfishing Cabo Fish Report to March 30

JC Sportfishing Weekly Fish Report.
As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 3/23/14 to 3/30/2014JC's Sportfishing Fleet, Cabo San Lucas

WEATHER:  The weather has been really good all week with basically a little warmer than normal temperatures. The wind has still been blowing in the afternoons and does have some effect on the fishing but it has tailed of some compared to what it was over last 2 weeks. The heat is coming early this year I can feel it some days this as we were close to hitting ninety a few days over the last 10 days.

WATER: The water temperature has warmed some with temperatures in the low 70,s to mid 70,s in most. This rush of warmer water in the area is a little early but we expect fishing to get better because of it.

TUNA: I don’t have any reports on Tuna as they are pretty much nonexistent right now and were are hoping for some schools to show. Read the complete JC’s Sportfishing Weekly Fish Report at

Recipe: From The Admirals Kitchen – Jerrys Grilled Grouper
This is a Baja California secret … and a great way to grill fish that leaves you worry-free. Not only does this make for easier fish cleaning, but the scales keep the fish from drying out while on the grill. Fish cooked this way consistently results in juicy, moist fillets.

Pisces Sportfishing Weekly Fish Report March 22 to 28th

March 22nd to March 28th, 2014
Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined: 78%
Numbers at a glance: Marlin 49%, Dorado 23%, Small Game 30%

pisces-fleet-striped-marlin-1BILLFISH:  We are pleased to report an improvement in the fishing this week, as the moon waned we still had some hit or miss days but also some outstanding ones. The water never really got cold so now with the moon gone all the signs are that the fishing will take an upturn. To start out the period Pisces Listo headed to the 95 spot on the Cortez side where they did well to release four marlin from 120 150 lbs. for Robert Russell & Todd Miller from Las Vegas & Kingwood Texas, respectively. This same day Pisces Rebecca had a great day too, a little further out at the Herradura, where they released three stripers and boated six dorado for Candy Johnson and friends from Dress, Idaho. Next day out Listo has the same anglers on board and not having luck at the 95 spot the motored further north and parallel to shore which was the right move, as they ended up releasing six marlin, on live bait in front of La Playita. After this fishing dropped off again, with Punta Gorda producing a few marlin, but not for everyone. It was in this area that the Rebecca caught one of the largest stripers of the week; the fish caught & released by Patrick Mitchell from Illinois was right at the 200 lb. mark, it was estimated and he was fortunate to get a couple of dorado too.  . . . .  Read the complete Pisces Sportfishing Cabo Fish Report at

Cabo Magic Sportfishing Fish Report, April 01, 2014

Cabo Magic Sportfishing Cabo Fish Report  April 01, 2014

cabo-magic-sportfishing-2a-300x138Beginning with awesome weather we have been thrilled to welcome aboard some Return VIP Guests as well as the chance to work with some New VIP Guests. All of our crews are delighted they are given the opportunity, knowing there are many choices – and that you’ve selected us, and them, to take you on your excursion, we ALL are sincerely grateful.

WHALES, WHALES, WHALES!  They are everywhere! So guests are reporting seeing them on the Pacific Side as well as Sea of Cortez. Lots of them and we never tire of seeing them. Please remember our captains will not get close enough for you to touch them and ask that ALL captains remember to maintain respectful distance from the mamas and their calves.

OK so we’ve got a whole lotta fishing going on . WHO is catching and WHAT are they catching?

First of all — Springtime is tricky .. some days are awesome and other days are frustrating .. Remember its the temperature breaks, and schools of bait, that what you are hunting are following. And this year we are doubly challenged by what appears to be El Nino conditions, which essentially means warmer waters, closer in, earlier than ‘usual’. But, since our two bodies of water that meet exactly here at “Lands End” are moving in opposite directions, its hard/impossible to accurately predict where to go.

Gordo Banks Pangas Fish Report March 28th

Gordo Banks Pangas, San Jose del Cabo, Fish Report March 22 to March 28, 2014

gordo-banks-pangas-mely-3Anglers –Vacationing tourists continue to arrive in soaring numbers, as spring break season is now in full swing. Weather has been very pleasant, prevalent winds were gusting early in the week, with ocean conditions being quite comfortable late week. Ocean water temperatures were ranging in the upper 70s towards the Gordo Banks and further north, while currents were in the lower 70s on the Pacific grounds. Day time highs were in the low 80s, feeling a bit more like summer than spring. Whales are vanishing from the area rapidly, headed on their long migration towards the rich feeding grounds of the Bering Sea.

The striped marlin action off of the San Jose del Cabo area started back up with a flurry, feeding marlin were seen in concentrations, anywhere from 2 to 8 miles from shore, moving quickly at times, seen free jumping and tailing on the surface as well. Striking on lures as well as live caballito or rigged ballyhoo, many charters reported having multiple chances for stripers per outing. With inshore and bottom action being sporadic, much of the week anglers found that there was actually a better chance at finding marlin than any of the other smaller gamefish closer to shore.

There was a variety of other species now in local water, though it seemed that none of them were really abundant, or consistently biting on a day to day basis. Yellowtail were occasionally being hooked into on the various rocky high spots, some of these jacks were found close to shore on the ordinary roosterfish and sierra grounds . . . . . Read the complete Gordo Banks Pangas Fishing Report at

Bad Medicine Fishing Report March 2014

Bad Medicine Sport Fishing – Cabo Fishing Report March 2014

bad-medicine-fish-report-mar-2014Winter conditions are setting in here in Cabo, and along with that comes the annual migration of Striped Marlin. The bite has been incredible off the light house on the Pacific side. Many boats are hooking 5-10 Marlin per day on live bait fished deep. Golden Gate bank on the Pacific has also started with its Striped Marlin bite. Lots of fish hitting live bait fished down deep. The Yellowfin Tuna have also shown up! Large schools have been found near Jaime Bank and off the lighthouse 15-20 miles out. We are filling coolers quickly with some killer shashimi! Lots of dorado have been mixed in with the Marlin. The Pacific has been hot for Dorado action near shore all the way up to Todos Santos.
