8/29/2013 – Storm Report
AUGUST 29 2013 – noontime report from David Flores, Gringo Gazette edited by Lori G.

Tropical storm Juliette formed very quickly just south of us on Weds. Our Port Captain announced the Port would be closed on Thursday.

The regions of Los Cabos, Pescadero, Todos Santos and La Paz – rain started around 4 in the afternoon, increasing around 8pm and reaching full force around midnight.

As usual, the streets flooded quickly, slowing vehicle traffic. The waters will recede quickly and things will be cleaned almost as fast. Everything returns to normal darn fast around here.

Most damage is being reported from Todos Santos and Pescadero on the Pacific side.

Many businesses closed early on Weds and most schools were closed today.

A man was reported dead at the El Progresso barrio, a squatter settlement. He had been stealing electricity, and the badly wired patch job came lose, and the dangling cable killed him.

Some 400 people were evacuated from homes which were perched at the edge of arroyos, because they were expected to quickly fill, and possibly overflow.

Some schools have been prepared as emergency shelters. The wind was strong enough to take some trees, electricity and telephone poles down, and some blocks have no electricity due to fallen utility poles.

The power and telephone crews are scampering around everywhere, repairing damages quickly. (Usually the electricity agency, {CFE}, sends repair crews over from the mainland in advance of a predicted storm.) Some more rain maybe today, but the sun should shine on us again Friday.

8/26/2013 –  CABO MAGIC –  Monday August 26th.

This is the time of calendar year when tropical storms affect our fishing and catching even if we don’t get rain. The movement created by winds and currents influence the fish you are coming to hunt.

That said, we had IVO as an unwanted visitor this past weekend .. arriving Friday and staying Saturday too .. the port was cerrado (closed) Adios IVO. We sincerely do appreciate, and publicly thank our guests for working with us while we shift folks around .. accommodating arrival and departure schedules and such .. good karma :-)

As is always the case, conditions following a storm’s passing are exceptional.
