Cabo Fish

Cabo Fish

This year of 2015 will be remembered for all of the rebuilding efforts created from Hurricane Odile devastation in September of 2014. This year there was record early forming hurricanes in May and now the Los Cabos area has just dogged a major hit by one of the latest Hurricanes to ever form in the Eastern Pacific. This storm named Sandra, follows Rick of last week, which never impacted land, though Sandra strengthened to a category four storm and appeared to be on a collision course with the Southern Baja, but the system was pushed away by strong shear, which also caused Sandra to weaken rapidly and pass far enough to the south to not cause any local damage. Los Cabos ports were closed for at least Friday and part of Saturday, by Sunday sportfishing fleets do expect to be back operating as normal. Swells increased to 10/12 feet, though wind never amounted to much and rainfall was not significant either.

We are now just winding down from our busy fall season, there always is a slack period after Thanksgiving and before Christmas, family priority shift directions. Though this past week was busy with visitors.

BILLFISH: Another great week for late season blue marlin catches in Cabo! We are not used to seeing all these bluesso late in the year and surely this is the result of the“El Niño” current which has brought consistentwarm waterthroughout the year and therefore steady, good catches.  Let´s start with the Pisces 28ft “Adriana” who released a blue marlin estimated at 200 lbs. outside of la Herradura for Ulf Cristiansson and Lennart Arrenius visiting from Sweden. Cabo Fish Report
Nov. 7 – 23, 2015

SYNOPSIS: A two week break since my last report mostly because little has changed. Tuna are out there a ways, mostly footballs, Dorado are around and there are some nice ones, a few Wahoo recently since we had the right moon phase, scattered Striped Marlin and a few Sailfish and an occasional Blue, inshore remained a bit slow.

WEATHER: Until two days ago we were having the perfect weather with nighttime lows down to 68 degrees and daytime highs in the mid 80’s. Several days ago it changed a bit with higher humidity and higher temperatures. Daytime highs up to 98 degrees and nighttime lows in the mid 70’s. We had some clouds move in, enough that we thought we might receive a bit of rain, but that has not happened yet. We had a few days of strong winds from the northwest that made for choppy conditions on the Pacific but it has calmed down a bit.

WATER: Swells on the Pacific side have been in the 3-5 foot range and on the Cortez side of the Cape they were smaller at 1-3 feet. The water on the Pacific side has been much cleaner and clearer than the water on the Cortez side but there has only been a temperature difference of one degree.

BILLFISH: Another great and busy week in Cabo for billfish with an increase of thirty one percent over last week. We are still seeing a late run of Blue Marlin in the area coming in general from different fishing grounds spread over the Pacific side and the Cortez side. Art Hevener, Sean Ziconi and the rest of the Hevener´s gang Arthur and William, released a 350 lbs. blue marlin on November 16th aboard the 31ft Halcon. The group of Anders Lundgren from Sweden on their yearly visit to Cabo managed to release a blue marlin on Pisces “Tiburon” outside of the 11.50 spot. Twenty eight foot Pisces “Andrea” went all the way to the Golden Gate making a memorable trip for father and son Jim and Brandon Boyd, from Bal Harbor, FL. Released a 200 lb. blue; good job guys! O the other hand Stefan Trumstedt, Kjell Ljunggren and Jens Bergstrom had a great fight on the Pisces “Rebecca” releasing another blue marlin and four striped marlin on November 18th. But we have more! Another group visiting from England, headed up by Bob Challis, Peter Gurd and Paul Smith did well on the 35ft Valerie releasing a 250 lbs. blue marlin at Cabeza de Ballena in the Sea of Cortez. Pisces 32 ft. “Bill Collector” with Brian & Lori Swift, James and Wendy Yale from Texas aboard did well releasing a 210 lbs. blue marlin and dorados over at San Jaime Bank. Pisces 38ft “C Rod” our most recent winner from the Tuna Tournament battled another blue marlin for William Gluckman and Sonia Schaefer from New Jersey. More Swedish anglers in town! Ulf Christiansen and Lennart Arrenius, first timers are huge billfish fans and decided to visit our areas which paid off as they released a blue marlin and a sailfish aboard the 28ft Pisces “Adriana”; they are promising to return next year! Loads of striped marlin released as well! Pisces 35ft “Listo” released three striped marlin at San Jaime, with the Alexis Hodges group, Cecile, Angie and James visiting from Woodrock, Georgia and Phoenix, Arizona. Pisces “Shambala” our 60 ft. Hatteras had one of the rarest of billfish catches, a Shortbill Pacific Spearfish, a fish few anglers can claim to have caught in the Los Cabos area.

What to do with your Catch?
You just went out for the sportfishing trip of a lifetime and are heading back to the marina with an ice chest full of Dorado and Wahoo, but you are unsure of what you are going to do with them. What can you do with our fish? Here is a breakdown of several different things you can do with your catch, from eating the meat to hanging it on your wall.

Catch and Release: If you are fishing for marlin, it is recommended that you use a catch and release method of fishing to help the local conservation efforts. Cabo San Lucas is one of the world’s top fishing spots and we like to keep it that way by letting the big fish go. If it is your first time fishing or you catch the marlin of a lifetime, it is acceptable and legal to bring back in one billfish. If you only want it for a wall trophy, the technology we have today is capable of creating exact replica wall mounts that will last much longer and let your fish live.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS Fish Report to November 6, 2015

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –
November 6, 2015

20151030_121941

The weather patterns finally are starting to feel like Fall, though daytime temperatures were still warm reaching up to 90 degree, early morning lows are about 65 degrees, ideal climate actually. One drawback is that we are also feeling the north winds in recent days for the first time this season, up to 20 mph, this has made for choppy conditions on fishing grounds north of Punta Gorda. Water temperatures are now in the 84 degree range, no distinct area of a drastic temperature break. Swells have been moderate and early in the day most days ocean conditions were nice. Crowds are heavy this week, with the Won Tuna Jackpot Tournament having over 150 teams participating, this is the season’s final high stakes event.

There continue to be no sardinas available, baitfish supplies now consist of caballito, squid on most days, also ballyhoo starting to be available, some charters are looking for chihuil for use as trolling baits.

Here comes the Tuna Jackpot in Cabo!!
Big tuna have been brought to the scales in tournaments last week, good news for anglers in the Nov. 4-7 WON/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot now in its 16th year. It will feature $700,000 in payouts and prizes.
Expected is a field of 150 teams, up from 131 teams, led by last year’s champs on the Dona Meche and several other defending champions from last year and previous years battling for the title and the big money.
The tourney is held over four days and is based at the Tesoro Hotel and IGY Marina Cabo San Lucas and will feature two days of fishing, three nightly parties and one Friday morning Charity Charter on the official start boat the luxurious party yacht Cabo Escape. Coupled with the exciting flare gun starts Thursday and Friday, then two weigh-ins that draw three hundred or more onlookers, Cabo will be all about tuna that week, day and night.
