Suggestions for how to handle billfish: (Based on Billfish Scientific Research)

1. Do not remove the fish from the water, even for a photo. (Removal from water reduces survival rates by 60 to 80%.)

2. Use a dehooking device to remove the hook. If hook cannot be removed, cut the leader as close to the hook as possible.

3. Use circle hooks. The fish is usually hooked in the jaw or corner of the mouth, making it easier to remove the hook and less harmful to the fish.

4. Revive the fish by keeping it in the water, place boat in gear and have oxygenated water pass over the gills.

Cabo Fish Report
Oct. 16 – 30, 2015

SYNOPSIS: Well, the big money Billfish tournaments are over and I am glad! I have caught up on my rest and now working hard on getting the “Susie Q” up and running for charters. In the past two weeks everything has changed a bit, and for the better for most of the species, and the weather changed, for the better as well. Check below for more details!

WEATHER: It was almost like someone threw the switch once again as the change was almost overnight. We went from nighttime lows in the mid 80’s to mid to low 70’s right around the 21st, and the daytime highs have dropped to the mid to high 80’s. If it was like this year round there would be too many people living here!

GORDO BANKS PANGAS Fish Report to October 30, 2015

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
San Jose del Cabo

 Anglers –
October 30, 2015

ATT_1446221997929_20151028_120342

It seems that our fall weather patterns have finally stabilized, no new late season tropical storms have developed since last week’s incredibly power Hurricane Patricia, which made land fall near Puerto Vallarta, surprisingly the damage was not too extensive. Ocean water temperatures have dropped a couple of degrees in recent days, now into the 84/85 degree range, this cooling trend should continue as days are becoming progressively shorter. Swells have been moderate, tides fairly extreme with passing of the full moon, winds increased from the south and north winds are starting to play havoc for the East Cape region. Daytime highs were still into the low 90s, but now it appears we will have more comfortable conditions in the mid 80s, with low of 65 degrees, time for long sleeve t-shirts, sweatshirts and wind breakers.

Sportfishing fleets continue to be busy, with the Bisbee Tournament now past, everyone is gearing up for the WON Tuna Jackpot scheduled for next week. In recent weeks all of the larger yellowfin tuna encountered were coming from the Pacific Banks, San Jaime or Golden Gate, just in recent days with the change in currents, there have been tuna to over 200 pounds found on the grounds off of San Jose del Cabo and to the north of the Gordo Banks.

Good fishing, Eric

Fish Report Boy Screamed: “JC isn’t the song writer he thinks he is, he did write a few tunes for “The Archies” in 1969. I know for a fact JC wrote (Sugar Sugar, Bang-Shang-A-Lang and Jingle Jangle) for the Archies. I also heard JC collaborated with Alvin & the Chipmunks on their “It’s a Chipmunk Christmas” in the 60,s and he wrote “Beach Blanket Bingo” for Elvis, but besides that JC is really the Frankie Avalon of music. You know: A One Hit Wonder!!!

JC,s LEGEND and LIES will continue next week!!!

Bisbee Black and Blue Tournament Results!!!

It takes confidence to bet heavily when the stakes are so high. Yet that’s exactly what Team Tranquilo did this past week during the 35th edition of the Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament. The first-time crew from Costa Rica parlayed a hot streak with a hunch and the move paid off in record fashion. Tranquilo earned $2,511,462, the second-highest single team payout in Black & Blue history, with a blue marlin weighing 327 pounds. That fish was good for third place overall, sweeping all but one optional jackpots on the first day. Michael Moretti was the angler, with Captain Victor Julio Lopez at the helm of the 57-foot Spencer.

“This is the best third-place finish ever. It really means a lot, coming from Costa Rica with the boat and the team,” Moretti explains. “The competition here is the best in the world. It’s a different style than what we’re used to, but it’s very tough. The whole experience has been top notch and we’re already making plans to fish the Black & Blue again next year.”

BILLFISH: An exciting week in Cabo culminating in the Bisbee Black &Blue resulting in a huge payday for Costa Rican charter boat Tranquilo, not only did they win the Bisbee Offshore they took third place in the Black & Blue with a 327 lb. blue marlin, but because they were in all the different jackpots they took home more dinero than first or second place – $2,511,462.00 was added to the cash they had already won a few days before to give them a grand total of $2,971,662.00 and yes, that is dollars. First place was taken by local charter boat Rondinella for a 500 lb. blue marlin on the last day for a group of Canadian anglers headed up by Tyler Squire which netted them $356,255.00. Second place also went to another local charter boat, What a Journey for Texan anglers who landed a 356 lb. blue and took $156,937.00 in prize money. Although regular charter business was brisk and productive the same could not be said of the tournament fishing resulting in one of the slowest Bisbee’s we can remember.

Anglers –
October 23, 2015

AkersNow into the third week of October, only in the last couple of days we have felt cooler temperatures into the 60s during early morning hours. Quite pleasant conditions now, actually need a sweatshirt or light windbreaker. Most sunny skies, we are expecting some more scattered cloud cover from the distant bands of Hurricane Patricia. This latest storm is turning out to be the most powerful system every recorded in either the Pacific or Atlanta. Now situated offshore of the coast, between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta, Patricia has reached category five status, has sustained winds of 200 mph and gusts to 245 mph, sounds like data from a tornado. This incredibly strong storm is following a path directly towards making landfall late Friday, sure hope everyone in the path has taken necessary precautions and evacuated to safer land.

PISCES FISH REPORT

UntitledBILLFISH: An exciting week with the lead up to tournament season preceded by 48 hours of steady rain this past Saturday and Sunday. Fishing remained steady and varied, with plenty of billfish, including pretty good numbers of small blue marlin, striped marlin and sailfish. Fishing conditions were not much fun in the rain and many anglers opted to turn around and come back in after only a few hours; those that stuck it out though tended to do well, such as Patrick & Jeanne Neville from Bradenton, Florida who released four striped marlin aboard their favorite boat Tracy Ann . We don’t easily forget this couple as a few years ago they caught a 700 lbs. plus blue marlin the day before the Bisbee tournament. Another boat that did well was Hot Rod with both a blue and striped marlin released for Joseph Munck from Alabama. Daniel Ryan did very well aboard the boat he has been fishing for years Rebecca with a blue marlin released, two striped marlin and fifteen tuna – showing his friend aboard a great day of Cabo fishing. Tiburon our newest 31 ft. Bertram showed Jeff & Tom from Post Falls, Idaho a great time catching a striped marlin, sailfish, pilot shark and tuna.
