Cabo Fish Report
July 14 – 28, 2015

SYNOPSIS: Blue Marlin are out there and biting as well as some decent Striped Marlin, Sailfish are making an appearance due to the warm water, some small Yellowfin Tuna with a few cows in the mix, small Dorado (except one!) and a few Wahoo.

WEATHER: We were very lucky with Hurricane Dolores as she stayed quite a way offshore, bringing us some cloud cover, a few light rains and some really big swells. Once she had passed and the skies settled down we had partly cloudy skies with the low temperatures being in the low 80’s and the highs just pushing the 100 degree mark. The passing of Dolores brought with it a relief from the humidity, and that lasted three or four days. At the beginning of this week the humidity picked up and over this weekend we had storm clouds move in from an area of light circulation over the mainland. The cloud brought rain, lightning and thunder to our area. While most of the rain stayed in the mountains, we did see some strong rain locally on Sunday. One yacht was struck by lightning while pulling anchor in Chileno Bay at 2:30 on Sunday afternoon, no one was hurt although they were knocked down, but the boats electronics were fried. As I write this the temperature is hovering around 88 degrees with bearable humidity.

WATER: Hurricane Dolores brought 5 meter surf to most of the exposed beaches and took away a lot of sand, but with little rainfall the arroyos did not deliver any debris to the ocean. Once those swells tapered off we were back to normal with 3-6 foot swells on the Pacific side and 1-4 feet elsewhere.

PISCES FISH REPORT

JULY 18TH TO 24TH, 2015

Overall Catch Success Rate All Species Combined 63%

Numbers at a glance: Billfish 51%, Tuna 25%, Dorado 6%, Other 7%

UntitledBILLFISH: After the port being closed for a few days last week, the fishing was a little mixed up and the fish not always easy to locate resulting in several boats getting “skunked” and the less productive trips were for those on half days. Nevertheless we also had many outstanding catches. We are actually experiencing one of the best blue marlin bites in years. First up for us this week was a 300 lb’er caught aboard Halcon by John and Aaron Overral from South Fork, Colorado – their fish took an ever popular “petrolero” lure six miles out from the 95 spot on July 18th. This same day Pisces Bill Collector released a blue marlin off of Land’s End for John Hayes from Houston. Next day was one of the toughest of the week with boats hard pressed to get any hook up. The following day though, July 20th saw Pisces C Rod release both a 250 lb. blue marlin and a sailfish off of Twin Dolphin for the Guinn family from Jennings, Louisanna.La Brisa had a similar size blue this same day that took a live caballito for Dwaynee Pusley and family from Texas. The Guinn’s were out again on July 22nd, this time on Knot Workin where they did really well to release another blue marlin as well as boat three tuna up to 110 lbs., which they caught on a kite twenty miles out. July 23rd was an exceptional day for the fleet, headed up by Kathy Morris from Austin, Texas who fished aboard Pisces Andrea and caught a 220 lb. blue marlin, plus two sailfish that were released – they were thirty three miles out.

Baja Fly

A rare super large corvina landed by Coach Kurtis Swanberg while fishing out of Palmas De Cortez. This is the first one this size, I’ve seen in 15 years…Eddie Dalmau, Van Wormer Resorts

Eddie is absolutely correct! The last time I saw any this size were caught in a Magdalena Bay Estero nearly 20 years ago.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS Fish Report to July 24, 2015

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –
July 24, 2015

Last week Hurricane Dolores threatened to impact the Southern Baja region, but never amounted to much at all, as the system veered further west. Keeping it far enough away to cause any damage at all, actually very little rainfall was accounted for, the system dumped more rainfall in Southern California than it did in Los Cabos. Port closure was lifted on Saturday and conditions have been improving every day since. Ocean swells have diminished to moderate levels, mid-week we had six foot swells for a day or so, but this swell has weakened once again. Even though forecasts have called for variable percentages of rainfall every day, it has been mostly dry on the coast, with the exception of very limited isolated showers quickly moving through. In the mountainous area north of the airport and to La Paz, they reported greater measurable rainfall. We had been monitoring recent development of Tropical Storm Felicia, but this storm moved far to the west and quickly downgraded to a depression, causing no impact at all locally, except for increasing tropical humid conditions. Slight breezes in the afternoon have helped to keep conditions bearable.

139_Chewito_331LB

Ocean temperatures are now reaching the upper 80 degree levels, with most of the area now being in the 86/87 degree range, slightly cooler on the Pacific side of the peninsula. Water clarity quickly rebounded with calmer seas, blue water was found close to shore. Billfish activity has been centered around the 1150 and 95 spots, as well as on the Gordo Banks. Charters have been finding mixed success while trolling lures and various rigged baitfish, with more numbers of blue marlin starting to move in, as well as some lingering striped marlin and a few sailfish. Many charters were accounted for multiple billfish days, while others told stories of large fish being hooked, only to be lost.

BILLFISH: This week we have a much shorter report than normal as the port was closed for three days due to the proximity of hurricane Dolores. The storm caused no ill effects in Cabo except for big surf and a smattering or rain but as a precaution the boats were told to stay in, leaving many anglers frustrated as they didn’t get to fish. The fishing was exactly as it should be at this time of year, with a bit of a drop on striped marlin and an increase on blue marlin and sailfish. We had several blue marlin this week; David Gonzalez from Houston, got a nice fish on Speedwell as did the Bowen family from Emmett Idaho, who caught a blue marlin estimated at 160 lbs. at the 95 spot aboard Rebecca. July 13th saw 28 ft. Andrea catch a 300 lb. blue marlin at the Herradura on an orange and black lure for Claude & Kathy Callahan from Virginia. This same day Tracy Ann had a smaller blue in the same area for Houston anglers, the Villarreal family. Surprise of the week was for Cody Jeffcott from North Carolina, who had rented a panga by himself; he was shocked to catch a 360 lb. blue marlin just five miles off of Lands’ End as well as four tuna and two dorado.

Hurricane Dolores Closes Port!
 Port Closed Almost a Week!
Calm Today After  Large Waves and Wind?
A Few Blue Marlin Reported after Storm !!
Striped Marlin Biting Now!!
Dorado Fishing Slow Last Week!
 No Tuna or Wahoo Reports!
Inshore and Panga Fishing Impossible!
Luckily the Fishing Should Pick Up!!

HEADLINES: July 20, 2015:
Well, Hurricane Dolores passed by us over the past week and really messing up the fishing and even closing the port over a few days. It is open now and back to normal now, but was windy and rough with large swells last week, which wasn’t good for boating and fishing forcing the port captain to close the port. After the storm we were seeing some action on Blue and Striped Marlin with all indications saying it was getting back to normal. Sunny weather today and yesterday were a good sign we will see some fish this coming week.

Hurricane Dolores
Hurricane Dolores was an Eastern Pacific tropical cyclone that brought peripheral effects to the U.S. and Mexico despite never making landfall during its weeklong journey.

Dolores formed as a tropical depression on Saturday morning, July 11, 2015. It became a tropical storm early July 12 and a hurricane July 13. Dolores rapidly intensified to a Category 4 hurricane overnight Tuesday night, July 14.

Sustained winds of 80 mph with gusts to 114 mph were measured by automated equipment on Socorro Island, a small volcanic island under Mexican jurisdiction late Wednesday night, July 15, as the eye of Dolores passed nearby.

Mexico’s mainland also felt some peripheral effects as outer rainbands occasionally reached the coast.

lookingback

Early in my fishing career, there was a select group of anglers who had caught a marlin while alone on their boats – Skelly Wilbur, aboard his boat, “6-Pak;” Bill George, aboard “Misty Bill;” Robert Newton on “Bob ’n Round” and Don Abrego on his “Presidio.” Their exploits become my Holy Grail.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS Fish Report to July 11, 2015

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –
July `11, 2015

Chame_Jesus_140TunaAs school sessions end for the summer break we are now seeing more family vacationers arrive in Los Cabos, they have been greeted with calm, warm and humid patterns this past week. Distance tropical low pressure areas off to the west have created more tropical conditions, though winds have been light and skies very clear, moderate swells and clear blue water being found close to shore. Only rainfall reported has been to the north of San Jose del Cabo, near Miraflores and Santiago, vegetation is lush green in this region, compared to the parched desert landscape south of the airport, this is the normal pattern July through September, while coastal rainfall is more often associated with storm systems from the south, not like local thunderstorms that develop over the mountains north of San Jose del Cabo.

Ocean water temperatures have risen up to 85 degrees in areas, clear blue water for the most part, varying currents, raging at times, fleets are fishing over a wide span, searching for more productive waters. Billfish action slowed, warmer water can make striped marlin very sluggish and the majority of these stripers migrate towards California during the summer. A handful of sailfish are now moving in, and there have been blue marlin hook ups as well, though these fish are very scattered and not very active at this time.

I am a 3 time Golden Glove lightweight champion, 2 times Arkansas Midget Wrestling State champion, Branson, Missouri Blue Hair senior citizens’ arm wrestling second runner up. That’s Right JC laughingly said: “I did coldcok Boxcar Willie when I was getting his autograph”He called me: “a little Twirp”!! I had a run in with Bobbie Vinton also, and I had to teach him a lesson, he stole my song: “Red Roses for a Blue Lady”I caught Bobby in Vegas and threw him down a flight of stairs in the old Trpoicana Hotel. I was playing piano like a lounge lizard back then. JC shouted: “Tell Fish Report Boy, I’m Waiting, Bring it on”

WEATHER: Big problem all week except for today it has finally died down. WIND, WIND, WIND really the major story all of this past week as it has pretty much wiped out our fishing week last week and now its calm. Who knows? It was so windy at some points that it actually became dangerous to be out there fishing for some of the smaller boats.

WATER: Still quite the contrast of water temperatures from Pacific side to the East Cape area. I am thinking maybe the wind blew some cooler water towards San Jose over the last week cause we have been getting a good wind from the north all week.
