GORDO BANKS PANGAS Fish Report to May 29, 2015

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –
May 29, 2015

Light crowds of tourists now, as school semester’s soon finish, we will see greater numbers of vacationers arrive. At this time the season’s first tropical storm has developed off of the coast of mainland Mexico, named Andres, this system is forecast to follow a more westerly path, keeping it well away from any impact with land. As Andres brewed some 500 miles to the south, the weather became more tropical, feeling like summer, warm and humid. We do expect to see higher ocean swells develop over the weekend. Water temperature temperatures have ranged from 72 degrees on the further Pacific banks, up to the 78/79 degrees in the vicinity of the Outer Gordo Banks.

Ed_Kliber

There were variable gusty winds out of the north and switching from the south, on and off throughout the week, this made for unpredictable conditions offshore. Most consistent action found was for striped marlin, this action centered straight offshore from San Jose del Cabo, with more billfish being found from 10 to 15 miles from shore, though some stripers were encountered much closer in. Many charters were accounting for multiple billfish days, two, three or more marlin, striking on lures, as well as taking dropped back baits. Large number of sharks were encountered on these same grounds, to the point of being a nuisance, quite hefty, brown variety, strong fighters, taking up a lot of angler’s time.

Cabo Fish Report
May 19 – 25, 2015

SYNOPSIS: Finally! We have been sitting here with our fingers crossed for the past several months waiting for the fishing in Cabo San Lucas to improve, and this week it finally happened! From Striped Marlin to Wahoo, the fishing has improved so much that I have a hard time containing my excitement. Take a few minutes and check out the details below!

WEATHER: Truly a beautiful week in Cabo San Lucas as our early morning temps were in the low 70’s with daytime highs in the mid to high 80’s. How could it be any better? Well, give us occasional partly cloudy skies, light morning breezes, clear blue water and clean white sand and it’s what I imagine heaven to be like. I don’t know what your weather is like at home (unless you are from Texas or Oklahoma, and then I just feel sorry for you), but I would bet it is much better here!

WATER: As you continue to read the rest of the Cabo Fish Report I think you may find the reasons for the massively improved fishing here in the water section. Not so much in the water temperatures, as they have changed only a little, but in the currents, and I will get to that in a minute. First, the water temperatures on the Pacific side of the Cape have continued with little change, with water close to the Cape at 71-72 degrees and water farther north, from the Golden Gate Banks to the inside off of Los Arcos at 72-73. degrees.

Adriana, one of our top boats, SIX marlin in one day!

BILLFISH: This week produced great catches that remained consistent throughout the week and some red hot fishing that we haven’t seen in months. The striped marlin bite was great at the 11.50 spot as far as Punta Gorda & multiple marlin catches per boat occurred on several days. One of the best days was May 21st, when 28 ft Adriana caught six striped marlin up to 150 lbs for Alex, Brenda, Jeff & Joe from Kalispell, Missouri. Listo the 35 ft Cabo, also had six marlin all on live caballito for a group from Colorado. Joseph Capezio from & friends from California had an amazing time aboard Tracy Ann as they released four striped marlin & five pilot sharks. Calvin Baker from North Carolina also figured in our top anglers for releasing five marlin up to 120 lbs on the La Brisa with Captain Rey Winkler. The Valerie had a quadruple marlin day for the Bateman’s from Texas on May 20th.

HEADLINES: May 25, 2015:
Well, nobody is quite sure what has gotten into JC this past week as he has actually apologized, saying: “I went a little overboard this past week and I really dont want to fire you and take away your pension”Pension? What Pension JC? Anyway, I told him: “I accept his apology and I will continue doing the report” and the only reason I am going to continue working with you is: “I see you really care about your business and your clients”and you take good care of them!!! I respect you for that JC!!

After his apology JC began to ramble and get sentimental, almost in some foreign tongue I didn’t understand!! He said this “you are the light I am the light, you are a Carp fisherman, I am a Marlin and Billfish guru” He continued: “you are nothing, I am something, you are weak and I am great, I fish with live bait, lures and ballywhoo, you fish with red worms, grubs and salmon eggs”. At that point I had to stop him, and tell him I had a report to write, and then he said: Any further discussions would be under the “Cone of Silence”. I ran out of his office again!!! Red worms and Salmon Eggs? Excuse me!! Wako

Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have a memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Well lets get on with the fishing report for this past week.

WEATHER: We had really great weather over the last week and we really can’t complain. We did have a few showers yesterday and some rain accumulation which we always need.

GORDO BANKS PANGAS Fish Report to May 22, 2015

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
San Jose del Cabo

Anglers –
May 22, 2015

WahooTunaNow starting the final week of the month of May, weather conditions continue to be very  pleasant, warming days, highs around 85 degrees, moderate breezes and light swells, all  combine to create comfortable ocean conditions for visiting anglers. Crowds are much lighter than we would expect for this time frame, many anglers who regularly fish out of the panga area of Puerto Los Cabos Marina are waiting for rebuilding efforts to be completed, progress is moving along, though priorities are not aimed towards repairing the damaged docks, so far crews are only working on all of the other surrounding infrastructure, people are having to park or be dropped off out on the far perimeter and carry supplies much longer
distances than pre-Odile days.

There have not been any sardinas available for the past several weeks, anglers have been relying on what available baitfish that are being found in the marina area, mainly caballito and some moonfish, also ballyhoo. Other charters are spending time catching chihuil and some people had success on strips of giant squid that they purchased ahead of time from local super markets. Ocean temperatures has been ranging from 74 to 77 degrees and blue water is being found within several miles of shore.

Striped marlin has been the most common species found offshore, straight offshore of San Jose del Cabo, anywhere from 3 to 15 miles from shore, concentrations of stripers are being found, free jumping and at times feeding on balled up bait sources. At times the marlin proved very finicky, though with persistence anglers were hooking up, many boats accounted for
one or two marlin, while other seen many fish, but could not entice any strikes, with so much food on the fishing grounds, the marlin would just not be hungry at times. Only an  occasional dorado being encountered, this is the time where we do expect to start seeing more larger sized dorado move into the area.

Cabo Fish Report
May 5 – 18, 2015

SYNOPSIS: Just a quick change-up on the Cabo Fish Report to assist those of you who only want an overview for the reporting period. Below is slightly more detailed information! This Cabo Fish Report will cover the past two weeks instead of the normal week period since there was little change from the April to May report! Billfish are everywhere! Every trip there are 20 to 30 Striped Marlin being spotted, but they are full and not willing to eat. That has been about the only offshore action here in Cabo. Cabrillo, Triggerfish and a few Amberjack inshore, with a few Wahoo as well. Only a couple of Dorado reported and still no sign of Yellowfin in our area. Now, for more detailed information in this Cabo Fish Report, please keep on reading!
WEATHER: It was an interesting weather period for us this past two weeks. The first week covered by this report we had the normal lows of 70 degrees and daytime highs of high 80’s with sunny skies. As the second week came onto the calendar The skies began to cloud up and the temperatures increased. Our morning lows rose steadily from 70 to 78 over four days, the humidity increased right along with the temps and finally, on Wednesday the rain fell. It started with just a few sprinkles, the window spotting kind and we thought that was all we were going to get. The twice the skies opened up, the lightning and thunder happened and we received real rain, the kind that washes everything off, no dust anywhere, and the roads running with water! The winds started to blow afterward and on Thursday morning we were back to 69 degrees in the morning with daytime high of 82 degrees and just a few clouds aloft. Since then the temps have increased a couple of degrees, and the wind has blown in the afternoon and the skies have remained almost cloud free!
WATER: There has been almost no change in water temperatures over the past two weeks as the Pacific side from El Arco and up remained in the 70-71 degree range. From there to around the 95 spot, inshore and offshore the water was a little warmer at 74-75 degrees and from San Jose and north on the Cortez side we were marking 77-78 degrees.

BILLFISH: Once again we had an up and down week with unusually cooler and windy weather as well as unseasonal rain on Thursday. After a flurry of good catches the fishing again started out on the inconsistent side, with choppy seas and crews often spotting numbers of marlin in the Punta Gorda area who were reluctant to take the bait offered by some boats, but others fishing the same area the same day did manage to hook up a few. As the week progressed the catches began to improve with Rebecca leading the way on May 10th with two striped marlin and a mako shark released off of Palmilla for Darryl & Jill Yarbrough. The next day out Neil Darling & Wade Ryan from Canada, did really well to release four striped marlin up to 120 lbs. at the 11.50 spot aboard C Rod. Fishing alongside them was Cabolero with three marlin released for Kevin & Holly Corlton. By May 12th nearly every boat from Pisces had one to three marlin, with Tracy Ann & Valerie topping the report this day and the majority of catches at the 11.50 spot. The day before this we had a first on the Valerie with angler Vincent Biesiot from North Dakota; he released a 130 lb. striped marlin, not unusual, but then the crew spotted a whale shark behind the boat and gave Vincent and his buddy the opportunity of a lifetime to jump in and swim with the gentle giant – rare to do on a fishing trip. At the close of the report C Rod excelled with five striped marlin released on May 15th for Casey Stencil and friends again at the 11.50 spot. Striped marlin where the top catch in Cabo this week with sixty five percent of our boats catching a total of 78 fish; all but one released.
